One of the most interesting phenomena of today's social life is the so-called counter culture. Its different expressions, both in Europe with movements such as those relating to the occupation of public and private properties and in Latin America with the "landless" movements, taking place in agricultural areas. and their affirmation as "counter-law", challenge the so-called official concept of law, by constituting a parallel law.
One might say that counter culture requires the rethinking of official law and its limits, the emergence of non-official rights that are not recognized by the official law, thus challenging the strong and long-established tradition that makes a correlation between law and the bureaucratic organization of power.
The requirement to rethink official law and its limits is a challenge to law as 'practical reason' and to legal theory and legal philosophy. Semiotic analyses from various backgrounds - Europeo-continental, Anglo-Saxon or otherwise - can contribute to the task.
Papers are invited on subjects related to the spectrum indicated above. Some possible themes are the following:
- Legal discourse and the construction of official law as an issue of meaning: The official-power discourse and the legal discourse, the justification of official power by means of the legal discourse, the limits of the official discourse.
- Semiotic analysis of the rationality of Law: Semiotic approaches: legal institutions and social life as confrontation of the universes of meaning.
- Official law as a ritual procedure and counter culture: The official procedural law and its limits of effectiveness in view of counter culture, the official property law and the emergence of counter culture.
- Counter culture as a "legal" phenomenon and values: Official-law values and counter-culture values; official ideology and counter-culture ideology; counter-culture challenge by official law; official-law challenge by counter culture, etc.
- Legal discourse and counter culture: Crisis in law and crisis in legal culture?: The legal discourse of slum dwellers; the legal discourse of NGOs (Non-Government Organizations); the social movements and the legal discourse of counter culture.
